The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Sciences (NCCOS) continued its mission to provide science solutions for coral reef ecosystem management through mapping seafloor habitats in the US Caribbean to the FKNMS. Coordinating with the Coral Reef Conservation Program, FKNMS, and the state of Florida Coastal Mapping Program, NCCOS conducted a rapid seafloor mapping gap analysis and identified areas that have not been surveyed with modern multibeam sonars. NCCOS used the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster to collect high-resolution multibeam seafloor bathymetry, water column echosounder, midwater fish, backscatter data, and benthic and fish community observations (i.e., video and photographs) using a remotely operated vehicle. In addition, FKNMS is currently reviewing regulatory and management boundaries in special management zones. The TSER has gaps in multibeam coverage that inhibit informed decision making with regards to conserving and managing diverse mesophotic and deep coral habitats that support diverse fish communities within the Sanctuary boundaries.
All data products produced are supplied as ready to use products for a Geographic Information System (GIS) and CARIS, projected in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) 17 N, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) and vertically reduced to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW).

The Nancy Foster conducted multibeam and splitbeam echosounder surveys that covered over 134 square nautical miles of the Tortugas South Ecological Reserve (TSER) and in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). Fish acoustics and multibeam data were also opportunistically collected on the southwest ledges of Riley's Hump, three miles north of the TSER sheet. After the TSER sheet was completed, the ship transited over to the FKNMS area of interest in a zigzag path to search for the ledges of the Florida Shelf Break. The multibeam data detected the ledges at about 75 m deep and followed the feature to the southwest corner of the FKNMS boundary. The Nancy Foster also logged multibeam data during the transit from Charleston, SC to the FKNMS sheet to opportunistically fill in data gaps and search for other cultural marine resources within the sanctuary and along the Southeastern coastline. Transit lines logged during previous Nancy Foster missions through the FKNMS were used to plan the lines for additional survey coverage along the offshore boundary of the sanctuary.
