 "description": "Species occurrence data were obtained from the Atlas of Spawning and \nNursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982). The atlas \ncontains information on all of the commercially and recreationally \nimportant species that use the tributaries, littoral and open-water \nareas of the Great Lakes as spawning and nursery habitats.  Close \nto 9500 geo-referenced data records (occurrences of fish species) were \nimported into ArcView GIS.\n\nThe 139 fish taxa reported in the Atlas had to be grouped into fewer \nbroad categories to produce meaningful distribution maps.  We chose \nthree functional classification schemes.Jude and Pappas (1992) \nused Correspondence Analysis to partition fish species associated with \nthe open water of each of the five Great Lakes and nine coastal \nwetlands. Three species complexes were suggested: a Great\nLakes taxocene; a transitional taxocene, which utilized open water,\n near-shore, and wetlands; and a wetland taxocene. We chose this as\n one of the classification schemes because we are particularly interested \nin identifying the distribution pattern of fish with coastal wetlands; \nfor clarity sake, we have renamed these taxocenes coastal, intermediate\n and open-water, respectively. For comparison, we also used \nCoker et al.s (2001) classification based on temperature preferenda (5 \nclasses) and Balons (1975) reproductive guild classification (32 guilds).\n \nThis dataset was uploaded to Data Basin and is available with additional information at: http://app.databasin.org/app/pages/datasetPage.jsp?id=4b84f46fc5014788aa112860ddf54d09",
