Service Description: 4 km NCEI/RSMAS AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5 data from 1982 to 2009 were used to depict the annual and seasonal climatological average sea surface temperatures (SSTs). From five-day periods throughout the course of an "average" year for a given season, an annual average was calculated. For the seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall), climatological average SSTs were produced. To make a seasonal climatological average, the mean SSTs for January 1-5, January 6-10, and so on, are calculated. The mean SST derived from the 5-day periods in each season from 1982 through 2009 are then averaged. Data from the Version 5.0 and 5.1 Pathfinder data with quality flag values of 4 through 7 ("good" through "best" quality) are used in the averages.
Measurements are in degrees Celsius. Seasons are as follows: Fall (October - December), Winter (January - March), Spring (April - June), Summer (July - September).
