GulfDataAtlas/NOS_DynamicFiveZoneSalinityScheme (MapServer)

View In:   ArcGIS JavaScript   ArcGIS Online Map Viewer   ArcGIS Earth   ArcGIS Pro

Service Description: Salinity maps of estuarine habitat have been developed for all estuaries in the Gulf of Mexico. Each map consists of five depth-averaged salinity zones (0-0.5, 0.5-5, 5-15, 15-25, >25 parts per thousand). Precipitation, flow-gage data, and monthly salinity averages were evaluated to determine which months would be used to represent the high, low, and transitional salinity periods. A contour modeling procedure was applied to the data to develop seasonal salinity zones for each estuary. Two salinity seasons, high and low, are displayed here. The "salinity seasons" vary by estuary across the Gulf of Mexico. For example, the high salinity season in San Antonio Bay, Texas occurs in April-September, while in Sabine Lake, Texas, the high salinity season occurs in August-October. The salinity patterns mapped for the calendar seasons were the dominant high salinity season occurring during each calendar season.
