description:

Hurricanes are major storm systems that can have significant impact on the Gulf of Mexico region. Storms may bring torrential rain, damaging winds, storm surge, and tornadoes to coastal and inland areas.
This map presents data such as storm category, storm frequency, and maximum storm intensity from 1851 to 2012. Only storms that were of tropical storm strength or greater while in the Gulf of Mexico are presented. Storm tracks are a subset of the IBTrACS (International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship) dataset with the addition of the 2012 data from the National Hurricane Center. |
