In 1997, the USGS, Seafloor Mapping Project conducted a series of test surveys in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Gulf of Mexico, approximately 200 miles south of the Texas-Louisiana border. The areas surveyed included, West Flower Garden Bank, East Flower Garden Bank, and Stetson Bank. A coalition of FGBNMS, MMS, and the US Geological Survey (USGS) was formed to map additional areas of interest in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico in 2002. The objective of the cruise was to map 12 regions of interest to MMS and the FGBNMS, including, Alderdice, Sonnier, Geyer, Bright, Rankin (1 and 2), Jakkula, McNeil, Bouma, McGrail, Rezak, and Sidner Banks.
Monthly mean bottom temperatures were constructed from long-term (2000-2008) ocean simulations using the Gulf of Mexico Modeling System (GOMMS) application of the nested Navy Coastal Ocean Model. |
