NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) and National Geodetic Survey (NGS) have acquired color aerial photography, hyperspectral imagery (HSI) and IKONOS satellite imagery for the near shore waters of portions of the eight Main Hawaiian Islands. The images are being used to create maps of the region’s marine resources including coral reefs and other important habitats for fisheries, tourism and aspects of the coastal economy. The classification scheme defines benthic communities on the basis of two attributes: large geographic “zones” which are composed of smaller “habitats”.
