Ground validation (GV) is the process of collecting underwater photos and/or videos at discrete locations. The purposes of these GV sites are to explore habitats that were unknown, and to verify that habitat types look the same (in the source imagery) across the entire mapped area. We collected underwater videos and photos at 243 GV sites, and interns from NOAA’s CNIM’s Field Office collected underwater photos at 49 GV sites. Combined, these 292 sites were used to develop habitat predictions and a habitat map in Saipan Lagoon.
