description: Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) was established in 2006. In 2016, its boundaries were expanded, making it the largest marine protected area in the world. Since its expansion, PMNM identified a critical need for additional information characterizing the extent of vulnerable and ecologically significant deep-sea communities in the expanded boundaries. Predictive spatial modeling has become a cost-effective tool for identifying potential distributions of DSCSs in areas where data are sparse, yet information is needed to support a range of conservation and management decisions. To address this need, NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), developed spatial predictions depicting the distribution of 22 deep-sea coral and sponge (DSCS) taxa within the PMNM. These predictions were created by integrating DSCS observations with environmental data using mathematical modeling techniques. These DSCS predictions were then qualitatively validated by local experts, and used to identify and prioritize sites for future exploration and research in PMNM. This work was conducted in close partnership with NOAA PMNM, NOAA Deep-sea Coral Research and Technology Program (DSCRTP), Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL), and Florida State University (FSU). It was funded by NOAA NCCOS and leverages investments made by several organizations, including NOAA DSCRTP, NOAA Office of Exploration and Research (OER) and Ocean Exploration Trust.
