Service Description: Water column sonar data are collected by active acoustic (or sonar) technology and contain acoustic scattering information from the near- surface to the seafloor. Scientists use these data to assess physical and biological characteristics of the ocean, including the spatial distribution of plankton, fish, methane seeps and underwater oil plumes.

In collaboration with scientists at NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Joint Hydrographic Center, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) initiated a new archive for water column sonar data in 2011. This project entails archiving water column sonar data collected on NOAA, academic and international fleets, and making the data available to researchers and the public around the world.

As this is a relatively new endeavor, the amount of data available here will continually increase.

Data Providers: NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), NOAA Office of Exploration and Research (OER), University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and international or non-NOAA groups (Other).
